| The Fur History of Daying |

Daying Town, of Zaoqiang County, Hebei Province, China,
is one of the seedbeds of fur and leather process in
China. It is named by "the Capital of Fur"
with a centuries-old history and an excellent reputation.
Daying is the base of fur manufacture, process and distribution.
It has more than 3000 years since the tale that the
prime minister in Shang Dynasty, Bigan, created the
process of fur and leather. According to the legend,
Bigan once worked as official in Daying area and he
first found the way to process furs and leathers during
his stay in Daying. Then he left to become prime minister
of Shang Dynasty. People here build a temple named Bigan
Temple in memory of him.
In Ming Dynasty, Daying fur and leather came into Europe
upper class after Zhenghe sailed across the Atlantic.
At that time, Daying fur became well-known for "Being
soft, suitable, fashionable".
In Qing Dynasty, the travelling merchants from more
than 10 countries such as Russia, Japan, England, the
Netherlands set up warehouse in Daying. To the 1860's,
Daying fur and leather were sold well abroad as products
exempt from examinations and taxes. Since China's Reform
and Open especially the recent years, the holding of
Daying Fur Trade Fair, further enhenced the fame of
Daying in China as well as the world.
Daying now has become the center of fur industry in
North China, with over 14,000 process enterprises and
places for stall in Daying and its 5 neighboring cities
or counties over 300 villages. The people engaged in
fur processing and sales are about 150,000 and the sales
volume reaches 1.8 billion Chinese yuan. Daying fur
and leather products are exported to Russia, European
countries, the USA, Japan, Southeast Asian countries
and Korea. |
